Facing the challenge of paedophilia: diagnosis and options in treatment options

    50.00

Speakers: Tillmann Kruger & Claas de Boer

    Content and Aim

The paedophilic disorder is a devastating condition, being often accompanied by intensive personal stress and high comorbidity on the one hand and being a major risk factor for child sexual abuse on the other hand. However, there is still little known about this paraphilic disorder and it often is falsely equated with sexual offending, especially by public media. Consequently, affected persons hardly seek professional help because of the fear of being socially rejected. Moreover, pedophilia is a neglected subject in healthcare curricula and thus leads to great insecurities among mental health professionals when faced with this issue. However, in recent years more scientific effort was made to better understand the paedophilic disorder, and prevention and treatment programs have been developed to treat affected people and address associated social problem adequately and therefore reduce the risk of child sexual abuse.
The aim of this webinar is to share our yearlong experience of treating persons with paedophilic disorders in the German Prevention Project Dunkelfeld (PPD) and give an insight in 1) how to diagnose the disorder and distinguish it from other disorders related to sexual offending against children; 2) identifying individual resources as well as risk factors of the patients; 3) providing well founded information for affected persons and 4) medical and therapeutical treatment options.

From literature to clinical practice: which hints sexologists should take from the evidence-based medicine?

    50.00

    Speaker: Annamaria Giraldi
    Psychiatrist

    Content and Aim

We all want to use the evidence-based approaches to assessment and treatment of sexual problems. In that we rely on the published and reviewed literature to implement best evidence.
However – many treatments in clinical sexology haven’t been investigated in larger scale studies, the evidence can be unclear, our patient groups may not be the same studied or may have more complex presentations than in published literature. In addition – some treatments make a lot of sense when using clinical experiences and practice, or when relying on knowledge obtained from other fields though we cannot show larger scale effects in large studies. Furthermore, the clinical approach may be to combine treatments, which is rarely don in research studies.
The speaker will present and discuss some important publications relating to treatment of sexual problems in men and women, how we can use them and answer questions from the audience. The presented papers will be available for the audience.

How can sex survive through menopause

    50.00

The menopausal transition is the gradual change from pre- to postmenopause- menopause being defined retrospectively 12 months after the last menstrual period. This phase is characterized by significant hormonal, emotional and social challenges, such as hot flashes, mood and cognition changes, while empty nest syndrome, retirement or illness of a partner may coincide. As a result, sexual problems are common and multifaceted.

In this webinar we will go through the complexities of the woman’s sexuality throughout mid-life; biological, psychological and social factors to be considered. Common symptoms and sexual difficulties will be presented, together with therapeutic options, both medical and non-medical, all based on the latest literature.

Mindfulness for sex therapy: Clinical applications

    120.00

    Speaker: Lori A. Brotto
    Psychologist, PhD

    Contents and aim

Sex in a multi-tasking world has become distracted, pressured, and unsatisfying. Rates of sexual dysfunction in men and women are high, and discrepant sexual desire in couples represents one of the most common causes for seeking sex therapy. For women, the update of flibanserin, the only FDA and Health Canada approved desire drug, has been low. Mindfulness meditation, defined as present-moment, non-judgmental awareness, has become a prominent tool in Western healthcare for a wide range of medical and psychological ailments, from pain to anxiety to heart-rate regulation. In this course, I will briefly share the science evaluating the efficacy of mindfulness for a variety of sexual health issues in women. This talk will consider also the purported mechanisms by which mindfulness is likely improving sex. Finally, we will consider how practitioners can integrate mindfulness into their own sexual health practices, and their own lives.

    Learning Objectives

This intermediate instructional course is designed to help clinicians:
    1. Understand how mindfulness is defined
    2. Discuss the science of mindful sex
    3. Be introduced to some of the practice

    Biography

Dr. Lori Brotto is a Professor in the UBC Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and a Registered Psychologist in Vancouver, Canada. She is the Executive Director of the Women’s Health Research Institute of BC located at BC Women’s Hospital. Dr. Brotto holds a Canada Research Chair in Women’s Sexual Health. She is the director of the UBC Sexual Health Laboratory where research primarily focuses on developing and testing psychological and mindfulness-based interventions for women with sexual desire and arousal difficulties and women with chronic genital pain. Dr. Brotto is an Associate Editor for the Archives of Sexual Behavior, has >170 peer-reviewed publications, and is frequently featured in the media on topics related to sexuality. She is a strong advocate for empowering women to take on leadership roles.
