Jim Bender (1958), American living in the Netherlands since 1981, health psychologist and sexologist. Registered sexologist NVVS; since 1996 (Dutch Scientific Federation for Sexology). Jim was the first sexologist in the Netherlands to work in the rehabilitation setting. He has been involved in research and teaching in the field of rehabilitation sexology for the last 20 years. Jim has been supervising health psychologists and sexologists over the past 10 years. WORK EXPERIENCE Sexologist; Basalt Rehabilitation Centra — 1995-present Work in inpatient and outpatient care addressing sexual health issues of patients and their partners. Main patient groups: traumatic brain injury and CVA, multiple sclerosis and other neurological illnesses. Sexologist; Private Practice sex and relationship therapy. 2002-present Individual and couples oriented therapy focussing on intimacy themes. Co-founder; Bender and Pieters; Consultation and Training in Rehabilitation Sexology, 2007-present. Training rehabilitation sexology to multidisciplinary teams working in the rehabilitation setting. Teaching and consultation in rehabilitation sexology for diverse health practitioners and health institutes. Research project; Short term sexological counseling for people with chronic illnesses or physical disabilities. Rutgers Nisso Group — J Bender, H Kedde, I Vanwezenbeek; 2007-2008. Training sexologists in the specific treatment program of brief sexological counseling with the chronically ill or physically disabled. Quantitative study of brief sexological counseling for 50 patients. Research project; Is the Dutch Rehabilitation Setting Ready for Sex? Sophia Rehabilitation and Rutgers Nisso Group; J Bender, M Hoing, W van Berlo — 2003-2005. Quantitative study researching the impact of diverse physical disabilities on the sexual health of rehabilitation patients and their partners. Needs assessment of this group about their expectations and experiences concerning sexual health care in rehabilitation care. Literature study focussing on the impact of diverse illnesses and physical disabilities on sexual health. Development of an educational program for multidisciplinary rehabilitation treatment teams to integrate sexual health care into their program. Development of guidelines for implementing a sexual health program in the rehabilitation setting. Sexologist, Rutgers Foundation — 1990-2002. Psycho-social sex therapy addressing sexual problems of the general public.
